William Moultrie



Moultrie, William (1730–1805), patriot general during the Revolutionary War. In 1776 he defeated the British fleet at Charleston harbor in South Carolina, defending a fort that was later named in his honor. In 1779 he drove British troops from Beaufort. He was captured in 1780 when Charleston surrendered to the British, and was freed 2 years later in a prisoner exchange. After the end of the war he served 2 terms as governor of South Carolina (1785–87, 1792–94).
