Bernard Law Montgomery



Montgomery, Bernard Law (1887–1976), British field marshal who defeated the Germans by Gen. Rommel at El Alamein (1942), thus driving the Germans out of northern Africa. Montgomery later commanded the British forces in the invasion of Normandy (1944). After the war he served as supreme commander of NATO (1951–58).
