Monte Cristo

Monte Cristo, small Italian island. Located in the Tyrrhenian Sea between Italy and Corsica, this mountainous island has an area of 6 sq mi (16 sq km) and rises to 2,116 ft (645 m) above sea level. Ruins of a 13th-century Benedictine monastery abandoned in 1553 after pirates destroyed it still stand there. Alexandra Dumas made the island famous in his novel The Count of Monte Cristo (1844).
