Walter Mondale



Mondale, Walter (1928– ), 41st U.S. vice president (1977–81),under Jimmy Carter. His early career was furthered by Hubert Humphrey. As a Democratic senator from Minnesota (1964–77) he was known as a liberal and populist reformer. Carter and Mondale ran again in 1980 but lost to Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Mondale was the Democratic nominee for president in 1984. His running mate, Geraldine Ferraro, was the first woman to be chosen for the vice presidency by a major U.S. party. Mondale and Ferraro lost to Reagan and Bush. In 1993, Mondale became ambassador to Japan.
