John Newton Mitchell



Mitchell, John Newton (1913–88), U.S. attorney general (1969–72) and convicted Watergate felon. A former law partner of Richard M. Nixon, he served as Nixon's campaign manager in 1968. In 1972, as director of the Committee to Reelect the President, he was involved in the burglary of the Democratic Party headquarters, resulting in his 1977 conviction and prison sentence. He was paroled in 1979 after serving 19 months.
