Misdemeanor

Misdemeanor, crime that is not as serious as a felony. In general, offenses punishable only by a fine or short imprisonment in county jails are misdemeanors. These may include traffic violations, assault and battery, and theft of small amounts of money. Convictions that carry punishment by imprisonment in state penitentiaries are felonies.
