Earl of Minto



Minto, Earl of (1845–1914), British governor general of Canada (1898–1904) and viceroy of India (1905–10). As governor general, he was criticized by French-speaking Canadians for sending Canadian troops to South Africa during the Boer War. As viceroy, he angered Indian nationalists by instituting reforms that resulted in the intensification of divisions between Hindus and Muslims.
