Minstrel show

Minstrel show, form of entertainment popular in the United States from about 1840 to 1900. White performers blackened their faces in imitation of African Americans and alternated jokes with African American songs, many of which thus became well-known American folk songs. Minstrel shows reinforced negative stereotypes of blacks that lasted for decades after the shows had ceased to exist.
