Milwaukee



Milwaukee (pop. 617,000), largest city in Wisconsin, seat of Milwaukee County, in the southeast region of the state. An industrial center and leading Great Lakes port (on Lake Michigan), Milwaukee was incorporated in 1848. Notable landmarks include the Greek Orthodox Annunciation Church, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; the War Memorial Center, housing the Milwaukee Art Center, designed by Eero Saarinen; the Performing Arts Center (1969); and the Civic Center downtown. The city has many spacious parks. Its educational institutions include the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Marquette University, and 16 other universities and colleges.
