Nelson Appleton Miles



Miles, Nelson Appleton (1839–1925), U.S. soldier, army commander in chief (1895–1903). A Union general in the Civil War, in the Indian Wars he campaigned against the Sioux and also accepted the surrenders of Chiefs Joseph (1877) and Geronimo (1886). He also commanded in Cuba and Puerto Rico (1898).
