Midge

Midge, large group (about 2,000 species) of tiny flies belonging to the Chironomidae family. Although related to biting midges and resembling mosquitos, midges do not bite. They often appear in swarms around streams and ponds. Their larvae, found in water, mud, tree bark, or manure, provide food for certain varieties of insects and fish.
