Arthur Middleton



Middleton, Arthur (1742–87), South Carolina planter and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. At the center of the struggle for American independence, he served as a delegate to the Continental Congress (1776, 1777) and to the Congress of the Confederation (1781). In 1780, he was captured by the British at the siege of Charleston but was released as a result of a prisoner exchange.
