Miami (tribe)



Miami (tribe), member of Algonquian-speaking Native American group, of the Great Lakes region. The Miami tribe hunted buffalo and grew crops. In the 18th century enemies drove them to northwest Ohio, where they numbered not more than 1,750. The Miamis were allies of the French during the French and Indian Wars and aided the British during the American Revolution. In 1867 most of the Miami tribe was moved to an Oklahoma reservation.
