Charles Messier



Messier, Charles (1730–1817), French astronomer and compiler of an extensive catalog of celestial sources of light that are not stars. Among these are galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. In attempting to distinguish between nebulae and comets, he discovered 21 comets and predicted the return of Halley's Comet in 1758–59.
