Ottmar Mergenthaler



Mergenthaler, Ottmar (1854–99), German-American inventor of the Linotype machine, an automatic typesetting device. Patented in 1884 and produced in 1886, the Linotype made the printing process more efficient and cost-effective, thus producing widespread changes in publishing.
