Merchant marine

Merchant marine, commercial shipping operations of a maritime nation and the personnel who operate the ships. Privately-owned cargo ships make up the largest percentage of most nations' fleets, but state-owned vessels are operated in some countries, particularly those of the Communist bloc. Gross tonnage, the total cargo capacity of all ships of a nation's registry, is the figure used to measure a merchant marine's size.
