It flows 2,600 mi (4,180 km) southward through the Yunnan province of China and Laos, along the Thailand border, and through Cambodia to its wide fertile delta in southern Vietnam, on the South China Sea. The lower 340 mi (547 km) can accommodate medium-sized vessels. Phnom-Penh is an important port. The Mekong River's lower valley produces much of the world's rice.
