William Holmes McGuffey



McGuffey, William Holmes (1800–73), U.S. educator and clergyman. His series of 6 Eclectic Readers (1836–57) sold an estimated 122 million copies. Almost universally used in elementary schools in the Midwest and South, they had an immense influence on public education. McGuffey was also president of Ohio Univ. (1839–45).
