Alexander McGillivray



McGillivray, Alexander (1759?–93), Native American leader of the Creek tribe. During the American Revolution he sided with the British and helped protect Creek tribal lands from encroachment by colonial settlers. Between 1785 and 1787 he led the Creeks (backed by the Spanish) in wars against Georgia and Tennessee, and in 1790 he signed a treaty with the United States guaranteeing the Creeks sovereignty over certain lands they held.
