McCulloch v. Maryland

McCulloch v. Maryland, case before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1819, in which Congress was ruled to have implied powers other than those specifically granted by the Constitution. The case involved the Baltimore branch of the Bank of the United States, which refused to pay a tax imposed by Maryland. The court ruled that the tax was unconstitutional because it interfered with Congress, which had the implied power to charter a bank, being responsible for the fiscal operations of the national government.
