Elmer Verner McCollum



McCollum, Elmer Verner (1879–1967), U.S. biochemist and professor. While teaching at the Univ. of Wisconsin, he pioneered the study of nutrition and was responsible for assigning letters of the alphabet to the individual vitamins (1915). He also studied the role of other minerals in the diet and the effects of Vitamin D. His published works include The Newer Knowledge of Nutrition (1918) and Foods, Nutrition and Health (1933).
