Matthew Fontaine Maury
Maury, Matthew Fontaine (1806–73), U.S. naval officer, head of the Depot of Charts and Instruments (1844–61). His study of the bed of the Atlantic Ocean and his Physical Geography of the Sea (1855) helped pioneer the science of oceanography.
