Maurice of Nassau



Maurice of Nassau (1567–1625), Prince of Orange from 1618, Dutch statesman, and military leader. A son of William the Silent, he conducted a successful war against Spanish rule and was an architect of the emerging Dutch republic. He was virtual ruler of the Netherlands, executing his former ally Johan van Oldenbarneveldt in 1619 and establishing the supremacy of the house of Orange.
