Maugham, W(illiam) Somerset (1874–1965), British author. A playwright, short story writer, and novelist, his writing frequently was characterized by irony and cynicism. Maugham's novels include the autobiographical Of Human Bondage (1915), The Moon and Sixpence (1919), and the satirical Cakes and Ale (1930).
