Christy Mathewson



Mathewson, Christy (Christopher Mathewson; 1880–1925), U.S. baseball player. Mathewson, a right-handed pitcher for the New York Giants (1900–16) and Cincinnati Reds (1916) is considered one of the best pitchers of all time and is credited with developing the screwball. His achievements include being the first pitcher of the 1900's to win 30 games or more for 3 consecutive seasons (1903–05), 373 career wins, and winning 20 games or more for 12 consecutive seasons (1901–14). Mathewson was among the first group of players inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame (1936). A victim of poison gas in World War I, he died of tuberculosis.
