Masque

Masque, or mask, dramatic entertainment popular in the early-17th-century English court. It concentrated on spectacle rather than plot. Members of the aristocracy often took part with the actors, and masks were generally worn (hence the name). Ben Jonson was the most famous masque writer, and Inigo Jones designed many of the lavish sets.
