George Mason



Mason, George (1725–92), U.S. politician who helped draft the U.S. Constitution, but refused to sign it because of its compromise on slavery and other issues. His Virginia declaration of rights (1776) became the basis for the Bill of Rights. Much of the Virginia Constitution was also his work.
