Herbert Marcuse

Marcuse, Herbert (1898–1979), German-born U.S. political philosopher who combined Freudianism and Marxism in his social criticism. According to Marcuse, modern society is automatically repressive and requires violent revolution as the first step toward a Utopian society. He became a cult figure of the New Left in the United States in the 1960s. His works include Eros and Civilization (1954) and One Dimensional Man (1964).
