Manuelito

Manuelito (1818?–1893), Navajo tribal leader. In the 1860s he led the Navajos in their fight against white settlers encroaching on their territory in what is now northern Arizona. Manuelito's forces were defeated by the United States Army (led by Kit Carson), which was sent in to help the settlers, and Manuelito surrendered in 1866. Two years later the Navajo Reservation was set aside in parts of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, and Manuelito led the tribal police force founded in 1872.
