Stephen Russell Mallory

Mallory, Stephen Russell (1813?–73), both U.S. and Confederate politician. After his resignation as U.S. senator (1850–61) from Florida, Russell was appointed by Jefferson Davis, president of the confederacy, as secretary of the Confederate Navy. Under his leadership, the South developed a powerful force of ironclad ships that overpowered the North's naval forces until near the end of the war. After a year of imprisonment following the war, Russell, along with other Confederates, was pardoned (1867) by President Andrew Johnson.
