Mallard



Mallard, wild duck of the family Anatidae. The dull brown feathers of the female are in sharp contrast to the iridescent green head and purple chest feathers of the courting male. These ducks, which grow to 28 in (71 cm), migrate from northern marshes in summer to warmer southern wetlands in winter. They are abundant in North America, Europe, and Asia.
