Makarios III



Makarios III (Michael Christodoulos Mouskos; 1913–77), archbishop of the Cypriot Orthodox Church from 1950, and president of independent Cyprus (1960–77). During British rule he led the movement for enosis (union with Greece). As president after independence, he worked to reduce conflict between the island's Greek and Turkish population. He survived 4 assassination attempts and fled temporarily during the political disturbances of 1974.
