Marquise de Maintenon

Maintenon, Marquise de (1635–1719), second wife of Louis XIV of France. After the death of her first husband (1660), she became governess to the sons of Louis and his mistress, Mme de Montespan. She replaced the latter in Louis' affections and, on the death of the queen, was married to him though she did not share his title and estate.
