Maginot Line

Maginot Line, massive French fortifications system, built 1930–34 between the Swiss and Belgian borders. Named for war minister (1929–32) André Maginot, it linked underground fortresses and was considered impregnable. However, it was easily flanked by the German mobile advance in World War II.
