Strait of Magellan



Magellan, Strait of, north of Cape Horn, separating mainland South America from Tierra del Fuego; about 330 mi (530 km) long and 2.5–15 mi (4–24 km) wide. An important route before the Panama Canal, the straits were discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1520.
