Madonna (Madonna Louise Ciccone; 1958– ), U.S. rock and roll performer. Madonna's early training was as a dancer studying ballet, modern, and jazz dancing. In the 1970s she performed with the Pearl Lange and Alvin Ailey dance companies. After joining a series of club bands as an instrumentalist, she set out to become a singer. The success of her singing career began when her songs became dance club favorites. She rose to superstar status with her songs and trend-setting fashions. Some of her well-known hits are “Like a Virgin,” “Material Girl,” and “Crazy For You.”
