Madeira Islands



Madeira Islands, archipelago, 308 sq mi (789 sq km), owned by Portugal, in the Atlantic Ocean about 350 mi (560 km) west of Morocco. Madeira, the largest island and site of the capital, Funchal, is a year-round resort; Porto Santo is also inhabited. The Desertas and Selvagens are uninhabited islands. Known to the Romans and rediscovered under Henry the Navigator in the 15th century, the islands produce sugarcane and Madeira wine.
