Harold Macmillan



Macmillan, Harold (1894–1986), British politician. Entering Parliament as a Conservative in 1924, he served in ministerial posts throughout World War II and the 1950s. As prime minister (1957–63), he restored Anglo-U.S. ties after the Suez Canal intervention, tried to improve East-West relations, and tried to gain Britain's entry into the Common Market. He served as chairman of Macmillan publishing house (1963–74) and was made an earl in 1984.
