Archibald MacLeish



MacLeish, Archibald (1892–1982), U.S. poet and playwright. His works include Conquistador (1932), a long narrative on the conquest of Mexico; the lyrical verse of Collected Poems 1917-1952 and J.B. (1958), a verse drama based on the story of Job, all of which won Pulitzer prizes. Cultural adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was librarian of Congress (1939–44) and undersecretary of state (1944–45).
