Edward Alexander MacDowell



MacDowell, Edward Alexander (1861–1908), U.S. composer and pianist. He is remembered for his lyrical piano works, such as the collection Woodland Sketches (1896). He headed the newly formed music department at Columbia University in New York City (1896–1904). His widow founded the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, N.H., a retreat for creative artists.
