James Ramsay MacDonald



MacDonald, James Ramsay (1866–1937), English statesman who led Britain's first Labour Party government. He was prime minister of the first and second labour governments (1924 and 1929–35). He headed a national coalition government of Labour, Conservative and Liberal Party members (1931–35) that attempted unsuccessfully to deal with England's depressed economic conditions. He was replaced as prime minister in 1935.
