Macaque



Macaque, several species (genus Macaca) of the Old World monkey family. They are found in North Africa, Japan, India, and Malaysia. A reddish face and rump are features seen in all macaques. The Barbary ape is tailless, while the bonnet macaque and toque monkey of southern India and Ceylon have tails longer than their bodies. The Japanese macaque has brown fur but a short tail. The rhesus monkey of India is used in medical research.
