Lycurgus



Lycurgus, ancient Greek political leader, possibly legendary, credited as founder of the legal institutions of the city-state of Sparta. Tradition says that during the 7th century B.C. Lycurgus instituted a new system of military discipline and training. Ancient historians cite him as a member of one of Sparta's royal families.
