Lvov

Lvov (pop. 753,000), city in Ukraine, near the Polish border. A major center for industry, culture, and transportation, Lvov was founded c.1256 and became a commercial center on the trade route between Vienna and Kiev, the Ukrainian capital. The region around the city was ruled by Poland, Turkey, and Sweden between the 13th and the 18th century. In 1772 Austria took control of the city and changed its name to Lemberg, making it the capital of the region called Galicia. Poland again ruled the city from the end of World War I until 1939. Lvov is known for its university, founded in 1611.
