Lusaka

Lusaka (pop. 870,000), capital and largest city of Zambia, in the south-central part of the country. Founded as a European trading post (1905), it was the capital of British-ruled Northern Rhodesia from 1935 until Zambian independence (1964). Intersecting road and railway lines make Lusaka a transportation center, with highways leding to Tanzania, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. The city is also a commercial and government center as well as home to the University of Zambia.
