Benjamin Lundy



Lundy, Benjamin (1789–1839), U.S. abolitionist. An activist whose efforts paved the way for the national antislavery movement, Lundy organized the Abolitionist Union Humane Society in Ohio in 1815. As an editor, he published The Genius of Universal Emancipation and the National Enquirer. Lundy traveled widely in search of places where free blacks could settle. In his effort to prevent slavery from expanding, Lundy worked closely with John Quincy Adams, when Adams was a congressman.
