Lucerne



Lucerne (pop. 59,100), city in central Switzerland, on the banks of the Reuss River and western shore of Lake Lucerne, capital of Lucerne canton. The city is considered one of the most picturesque in Switzerland, the old town on the bank of the Reuss containing many historic structures, including houses dating back to medieval times. Lucerne is a major European tourist center, with casinos, beaches, horse-racing and jumping competitions, and a traditional pre-Lenten carnival.
