Lon Nol



Lon Nol (1913–85), Cambodian general and head of state (1970–75). In 1970 he led a coup to depose Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Although Lon Nol declared Cambodia as a republic he ruled as a dictator, cooperating with the U.S. invasion in the spring of 1970. Overthrown by Khmer Rouge guerillas in 1975 after a bloody civil war, Lon Nol fled to Hawaii, where he settled.
