Log

Log, in nautical measurement, device used to measure a ship's speed. It consists of a piece of board in the form of a quadrant of a circle, balanced so as to float upright. When thrown from the ship, it drags on the line to which it is attached, causing it to unwind at a rate corresponding to the ship's velocity.
