Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood



Lockwood, Belva Ann Bennett (1830–1917), attorney, suffragette, and Equal Rights Party nominee for president of the United States in 1884 and 1888. The first woman authorized to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, Lockwood won equal pay for women working in government. She is also known for her successful defense of the threatened land rights of the North Carolina Cherokee.
